Here are three freehand ink scribble portraits based on #Sktchy reference photos from my phone screen. I am sharing these, not because they are great drawings or even good likenesses, but to illustrate my recent focus on the process rather than the result.

Yes, I am enjoying scribbling with ink even more than usual lately. The flow of ink on paper feels good, even therapeutic, regardless of the outcome. You should try it – close the door behind you and draw something. Scribble if you like. Use a pencil with an eraser nearby if you prefer. Have fun. If it turns out to be a painful process, no harm done, just throw away all evidence and turn the TV back on.

But the other possibility is that it was rather fun and you see some potential “talent” that just needs to be exercised. If that is the case, file it in the back of some drawer and try it again tomorrow. After a dozen of these therapeutic scribble sessions, go back and look at your progress and extrapolate a little into the future. You just might get hooked. And you will probably realize that the process is enjoyable rather than scary. It could possibly turn into a daily relaxation ritual that produces daily contributions to your paper recycling bin. Or maybe you’ll want to save a few.

Either way, just try it and see where it takes you.
