There are two “red flags” to consider when listening to the news media or political speeches.
- If we are being told to be afraid of something, the speaker is trying to manipulate the emotions of the listeners. Typically, they will then offer their agenda as the solution to calm the fears they just imparted.
- If the speaker is angry, he or she is unable to think clearly. There is a time to be angry, but we should settle down and think before we speak… especially before we speak to the masses. If the speaker is still angry, it is apparent that they have not yet begun to think clearly. The other possibility is that they are pretending to be angry in order to deliberately manipulate the emotions of their listeners which would be evil rather than just unwise.
